The Surveyor and Plane Coordinate System

That convenience comes with a trade-off: plane coordinates are an approximation of the Earth's true ellipsoidal shape, and the further a project sits from the centre of its UTM zone, the larger that approximation error becomes. For most site-scale surveys the difference is negligible, but for long linear projects like highways that can span multiple zones, it is a detail that needs careful handling to stay within IRC (Indian Roads Congress) accuracy standards.
Getting this right at the start of a project avoids costly rework later, which is why coordinate system selection is one of the first conversations we have with a client's design team.
